Bodycam: D.C. Police Officer Exchanges Gunfire with Suspect

Aug. 11, 2023
No one was injured in a tense shootout between a Washington, D.C., police officer and a gunman, who fired on the officer before retreating to the top floor of an apartment.

Body camera footage captured a tense shootout between Washington, D.C., police and a gunman earlier this month that ended with no one injured and the suspect in handcuffs.

The incident happened Aug. 1 as police responded to reports of gunshots around an apartment complex in northeast D.C., WUSA-TV reports. An officer confronted a suspect and told him to show his hands.

That's when the man opened fire, and three shots can be heard in the bodycam footage. The officer quickly finds cover and called for backup.

The officer and the suspect exchanged gunfire before more officers reached the scene. Carrying ballistic shields, two officers began moving through the apartment complex, while the initial officer reported seeing the gunman on the apartment building's top floor.

Finally, the 37-year-odl suspect surrendered to police, and he was arrested and charged with assault on a police officer, carrying a pistol without a license, possession of an unregistered firearm, possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device and unlawful discharge of a firearm.

No one was injured in the incident.
